On March 31st, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, the East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE), in partnership with the Government of Kenya, successfully hosted an Inception Meeting for the EAC Green Hydrogen Baseline Study. This vital gathering brought together representatives from EAC Partner States, the EAC Secretariat, Ethiopia, and international stakeholders to launch activities related to the baseline study.
Supported by H2-diplo/GIZ-Kenya and implemented by GFA Consulting GmbH, the Study aims to assess the potential and readiness of green hydrogen in the region. This initiative is a key step toward accelerating the energy transition, promoting decarbonization, and driving sustainable economic growth in East Africa.
During the meeting, participants were introduced to the study’s objectives and methodology, engaged in discussions on the development of GH2, and explored the formation of GH2 Working Groups to drive progress. Participants shared insights and national experiences on GH2 initiatives while emphasising the need for enabling policies, robust trade partnerships, and international cooperation to accelerate the GH2 potential across the region
The meeting was recognized as a significant milestone in advancing regional cooperation for a sustainable and competitive green hydrogen economy in the EAC. The EAC Secretariat, EACREEE, GIZ-Kenya, and all other key stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining momentum at the upcoming Eastern African Regional Green Hydrogen Symposium scheduled for May 14-15, 2025, in Nairobi. This Symposium will serve as a crucial platform for deepening regional collaboration, sharing insights, and shaping the future of the GH2 economy in the EAC. EACREEE continues to lead efforts in advancing clean and sustainable energy solutions in the region while working with partners to shape a resilient, low-carbon energy future for the East African Community region.
